Paleo diets are becoming increasingly popular with each passing day, as people are finally discovering that they aren’t simply quick fixes based around losing weight as quickly as possible. In actual fact, paleo diets are not considered diets at all, they are instead lifestyle changes. There are now numerous athletes, fitness experts, and celebrities following paleo diet plans and reaping the rewards, and you can as well. To name but a few, you have Matthew McConaughey, Uma Thurman, and Jessica Biel who are huge fans of Paleo, and they certainly cannot be accused of being out of shape. If you’re thinking of trying a paleo diet but are not sure where to begin, you’ve come to the right place. Below you will find out pretty much everything you need to know about paleo diets, so that you can try it for yourself and see what all of the fuss is really about.

What is the paleo diet? Put simply, the paleo diet is a diet plan designed to mimic how our caveman ancestors used to eat back in the Paleolithic era. Back then, there was no processed food, there was no farming or agriculture, and food wasn’t guaranteed. Food had to be found, foraged, or killed. Nowadays, obesity rates are out of control, and people are suffering from countless food allergies and intolerances which many believe are caused by processed foods. Paleo diets place an emphasis on natural foods with nothing added, and nothing taken away. Human beings have been around for millions of years, yet we have only had farming and agriculture for 10,000 years or so. From an evolutionary standpoint, that simply is not long enough, which is why many people believe that we suffer with allergies and intolerance – because we have not evolved enough to be able to properly digest processed food.

Why is it so beneficial? The main reason why the paleo diet is considered so beneficial is because it places an emphasis on wholesome, natural, nutrient-rich food. As the foods contain no chemicals or additives, our bodies respond more favourably to them, plus we also find ourselves suffering from less allergies and intolerances because, evolutionarily speaking, our digestive systems have evolved enough to be able to deal with these foods properly. The foods and drinks consumed on paleo are also rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients, plus they are low in calories and so they promote weight loss and weight management.

What can you eat and drink on paleo?

Some of the most common and popular foods and drinks consumed with paleo diets include:

  • Grass-fed meat
  • Seafood
  • Fish
  • Organic eggs
  • Nuts (except peanuts)
  • Seeds
  • Certain fruits (low fructose fruits are better)
  • Most vegetables
  • Water
  • Tea and coffee (no milk or sugar)
  • Natural oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, walnut oil, etc…

The idea is to think about the types of foods that Neanderthals would have consumed millions of years ago. Of course you can cook your foods and can use seasonings and paleo-friendly sauces and marinades etc, but just stay well clear of processed foods and the types of food and drink which would not have been around in the Paleolithic era.
