A yoga mat is so much more than just an accessory. For most yogis, their mats are their safe space, a trusted territory where they can fully relax and relief from stress. But should we really trust in our yoga mats so much?
Here’s the deal:
Not all yoga mats are created equal.
Most yoga mats that we see on the market are manufactured in Taiwan and made of poly-vinyl chloride. PVC seems like a perfect yoga mat material as it is durable, inexpensive, flexible and non slippery. In reality, however, PVC is highly toxic and there are many health concerns related to these cheap yoga mats.
We don’t claim that only expensive yoga mats are good enough to be used. Nonetheless, when it comes to PVC you really get what you pay for. PVC can’t be recycled due to the toxins and carcinogens it contains, and has a negative effect on our well-being. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, PVC can cause liver damage as well as affect the reproductive system, the central nervous system and even the respiratory system.
Want to know the best yoga mat that isn’t costly?
We’ve done our research and have hunted down an affordable and much healthier alternative to PVC, namely TPE (Thermal Plastic Elastomer). It is a versatile compound that is generally much more stable and safer than PVC, highly used also in the medical industry.
But here’s the kicker:
Thermoplastic elastomers show advantages typical of both rubbery materials and plastic materials, what makes them really practical! TPE yoga mats can be recycled and reused with no harm to the environment as they bear the characteristics of non-toxic, non-heavy-metals, non-iritating and anti-microbal.
